It is vitally important to measure the brittle crack arrest properties of shipbuilding steels ensure that accidental damage will not result in total structural failure. Wide-plate test methods allow for direct measurement toughness but this kind testing incredibly expensive. Therefore, there a need cheaper and simpler which are able material’s toughness. In work, Compact Crack Arrest (CCA) testing, standardised ASTM E1221, has been successfully used thick sections EH47 steel. The results from study have compared small-scale methods. was found instrumented Charpy gives an overprediction CCA results, nil-ductility transition temperature (NDTT) Pellini tests conservative estimate. presented discussed terms effectiveness method integrity assessment large-scale structures.
